Got Joomla as an add on with your ISP through Fantastico? - not used to using a CMS like Drupal or Mambo? - then this is the book for you. It is well written and logical in its approach, as is Joomla 1.5. This is the main downside as this version of Joomla is still in the Beta versions and not available through ISPs just yet as it is not a gold final candidate. For example, at the time of writing, GoDaddy can update your Joomla version to 1.0.13, but not to 1.5
It would have been better for the author to acknowledge this, as he states that it is best to install Joomla independently, but may not be aware of the issues, and the difficulties of upgrading independently once previously installed by the ISP.
This is however a minor quibble, and I would heartily recommend this to anyone who is interested in using Joomla as their CMS based website

I liked Joomla and really wanted to get under the hood. Not necessarily covered in oil but proficient enough to take any template and make a really professional web site from it. Now I don't mean to be a naysayer but I bought this book owing to the praiseworthy reviews. I've been hand coding websites for ten years and have even built my own CMS using PHP and MySQL so I'll give my opinion for the sake of those who are about to buy based on what I feel are misleading rave reviews.

First of all, Joomla is a very powerful CMS, so in fairness to the author it would be very difficult to write a book which warranted five stars given the complexity of what this CMS affords one. However, I do agree with, J. W. L. Smits "doctor dream", and should have paid more attention to that review. The book will get you underway competently but when it comes to implementing a template and customizing it for your particular purposes look elsewhere - this book will not be especially helpful. By and large, it is for the novice, it simply is not for the professional. Hopefully a second or third edition will address information organization more clearly especially with regard to the many permutations Joomla offers for navigation. Afterall if your navigation misleads, your audience leaves the page rapidly. I think the editor should have helped Mr. Rahmel more closely, it seems rushed and frought with omission as if it were trying to remain under a certain number of pages. Adding the 'to Professional' onto the title tagline is clearly the publishers effort at entrapping a greater audience - poor form.

I've read the thing cover to cover and it really needs an overhaul in terms of informational hierarchy and content layout. Specifically, what constitutes an article, why does it fall under a certain category and where and what section that in turn lies beneath and why and how do I link an article under a category within a section - the fundamental stuff, I could go on. In summary, buy it if you know nothing about CMS's, for a beginner its a four star read and you'll have a CMS website in no time. For the rest of us, get back online and google the forums and or buy Barrie North's book, 'Joomla, A users Guide'.

Maybe it is not the best book to learn Joomla, but it is one of the "easiest to read" book about Joomla that I found. For beginners it is just a begin and for advanced users can be a reference book. The practical samples at the end of the book are very useful. The beginning of the book, page after page is used explaining what the web is, how a CMS is different from just using a bunch of flat HTML files, how to use FTP, and how to make Web-safe graphics, which are unnecessary and waste of paper. I mean somebody who is interested to learn Joomla, knows already all these basic things. The example installation on GoDaddy.com is just a bias (product placement).

This book has all the material to get a beginner up to speed setting up a Joomla 1.5 web site. But it has no material on Joomla 1.6/1.7. I bought this Kindle eBook in February 2012 when my sites were being moved from Joomla 1.5 to Joomla 1.7. The paperback edition from April 2009 purports to cover newer versions of Joomla - I assumed the Kindle version was up to date by 2012. It is not and only covers Joomla 1.5. For instance "Sections" have been dropped in 1.6 and 1.7 - this is not mentioned at all.

When will we get an up-to-date Kindle version? Will I get a free update? I paid $26.59 - significantly more than the $18 asked for the older paperback edition. I expect an up-to-date product from Amazon at that price.

After reading the reviews, I was somewhat skeptical. How ever with a need for more info I made the purchase. I am glad I did, regardless of your skill with joomla. You will find everything you need to get to grips with this powerful CMS! Some of the reviews say the book is for pros. My dealing with joomla is this. If you want a CMS with power and need the ability to use it, you will have to come to terms with learning. No book will do the heavy lifting for you! Those of you who did not find this book well detailed and informative. Ether you did not read it, or are just to lazy to work through the program. I gave it five stars only because that's as high as I could go!

I purchased this book hoping to have an insight to Joomla, once I received it I found the information to be for an older version of Joomla. The current version is Joomla 1.7.

This book is very outdated. A lot of the links listed in the book don't work anymore. It probably was a pretty good book in it's day though. I'd probably try a different book even if I had the most recent edition. Pretty good, but there is probably something better out there.

I purchased this book in order to learn about Joomla coding for our website. I have used it extensively and have created a great website for my academic and business needs. I am very happy to recommend it as it a fantastic value for money, easy to understand and to apply. Most likely it will not hurt to get the latest edition, as the code like this will be enhanced very soon.
